Mary McLeod Bethune opened in 1989 merging students from the Meadows and Laurel Hills elementary schools at the original Laurel Hills site. Since it’s renaming in 1989, Bethune has established a tradition of volunteers.

amed for famed African-American educator, Mary McLeod Bethune, the school is a warm and caring place that invites learning and cooperative teaching. Students are encouraged to excel in everything that they do. Bethune embraces the community and enjoys a strict tradition of parent involvement and community volunteers.
Students and teachers live the school motto, “Catch the Wave to Excellence”. Students, parents, and community enjoy many school traditions including Fall Festival, Mother Daughter Breakfast, Father Son Breakfast, Mommies & Me Tea, iMom Breakfast, All-Pro Dad’s Breakfast, Father Son Cookout, Skate Night, and many other family oriented activities. Volunteers and staff have coordinated numerous events to increase student awareness of the arts and to enhance/enrich the curriculum. Traditions like these make this school a family affair.
A school wide focus on technology has brought new equipment and software programs. With over new computers, Bethune has been able to equip each classroom, a science lab and two computer labs. The school has eighteen “ActivBoard” these interactive boards are distributed in classrooms and labs around the building. Our School Technology Specialist introduces new software and hardware to staff and students, assists teachers and students who are eager to utilize the Internet, and provides technical support.
There is a strong tradition of parent and community support for Bethune. During the 2010-2011 school year, with a school population of approximately 745 students, parents and community members logged-in an average of over 24 volunteer hours per student. The Bethune Parent Liaison provided support for parents and the community. Bethune’s business partners and business friends have also been actively involved in programs that emphasize family and community involvement.
