Our Balanced Literacy Model consists of several components including Reader's Workshop, Writer's Workshop, phonics, shared reading, and read aloud.  During our Reader's Workshop students participate in a mini lesson, read independently from self-selected high - interest books, as well as talk with peers and write about books.  Students participate in one-on-one conferences and strategy groups to support individual needs.  Our mini lessons are derived from the Reading Units of Study, a product of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, Columbia University.

The units focus on:

      • High-volume, high-interest reading – upwards of 30+ minutes per day
      • Building knowledge base through nonfiction reading
      • Teaching comprehension skills & strategies to support reading achievement
      • Value of interactive read aloud
      • Incorporating instruction on reading foundational skills and phonics
