Too Sick for School?


Many times parents wonder if their child is too sick for school.  The following chart may be helpful:


SymptomDetailWhen to Return
Fever100.4 or more  - Usually this is a sign of an infection that may be contagious.

Fever free for 24 hours without the use of an over-the-counter fever reliever


VomitingMore than one episode – not induced by cough or reflux

Able to maintain a normal diet and no vomiting for 24 hours



May lead to dehydration or be infectious


Diarrhea free for 24 hours


Frequent Persistent CoughMay indicate secondary infection

Minimal coughing or treatment begun


Infectious Illness (i.e. strep throat/pink eye)

Is contagious to staff and students


On antibiotics for 24 hours
Widespread RashCause unknown

Cause determined noninfectious


Persistent PainCause needs evaluation

Cause determined noninfectious


LiceLive lice and nits24 hours after treatment
