Heards Ferry Elementary School opened in September of 1970 to accommodate 249 students in 1st—7th grades. In 1986 when the middle school concept was developed in Fulton County, the 6th and 7th grades were removed from Heards Ferry. Heards Ferry was closed for the 87-88 school year for renovations and reopened the next year. In the Early 1990's the ethnic composition of Heards Ferry changed due to the Majority to Minority program and with the changing of attendance zones creating an atmosphere of diversity. In 1992 Heards Ferry was named a Georgia School of Excellence in recognition for it's outstanding educational opportunities. Heards Ferry relocated to a brand new building on Powers Ferry Road for start of the 2015-2016 school year.
