An Interview with Sarah Bailey – First Place Winner

Topic:  Immigrants and Unaccompanied Children Having Their Citizenship Revoked and Being Deported Back to Their Home Country

Why did you choose this topic?

I chose this topic because it has been a part of the Republican and Democratic politics lately.  The outcome affects my generation.

What kind of research resources did you use?

I watched the World News every day.  I interviewed an immigrant. I searched the web and used MackinVia.  I spoke to school administrators about the effects this has on education.  I also watched a documentary about unaccompanied children.

Tell me the most interesting thing that you learned.

Most of these kids leave their homes and families out of necessity.  Drugs, poverty, gang violence, hunger, and more cause the children to leave.

What is your topic and how did you choose it?

Our topic is Advertising of Electronic Cigarettes.  We chose this topic because our Mom works at the CDC and they are researching the effects of electronic cigarettes.  She has shared this with us. We wrote on a notepad for one week all that she told us.  This made us interested in the topic.

What kind of research did you use?

We used the information on the Atlanta Census Bureau and found the population numbers for Hispanic, Asian, and African American neighborhoods.  Then, we went to gas stations in those neighborhoods and looked on the windows for e-cigarette advertisements.

What was the most interesting thing that you learned?

The most interesting thing that we learned was that e-cigarettes are advertised more in Asian and Hispanic neighborhoods. It is interesting that people use these when they do not know if it is good or bad for you!
