This week we celebrate "Georgia School Board Appreciation Week!" On behalf of all students, staff and community members in the Shakerag family, we just want to express our gratitude to President Linda Bryant, Vice President Linda McCain and members Julia Bernath, Gail Dean, Kimberly Dove, Katie Reeves and Katha Stuart. Your hard work and dedication is greatly appreciated!
It's School Governance election time!
On Monday, every parent and staff member at our school will receive an email with a link to cast your vote for our new SGC members. Robert Luskin declared his candidacy for our parent vacancy and Jennifer Erikson submitted her proposal for our teacher opening. Even though we only had one candidate for each vacancy, we still ask that you click on the email and submit your vote. The voting window will be open from March 19 - March 23.
Spirit Night at Chick-fil-A
According to Chick-fil-A, "All Roads Lead to Chikin" … at least next week they do! Come join your friends and Shakerag family at Chick Fil A (3643 Peachtree Pkwy, Suwanee) on Thursday, March 22 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for Shakerag Elementary School's Spirit Night. A percentage of the sales will be donated back to our school.
Georgia Milestones Test
After spring break, students in grades 3 – 5 will participate in the Georgia Milestones End-of-Grade summative assessment. Georgia Milestones measures how well students have learned the knowledge and skills outlined in the state-adopted content standards in English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Different than in years' past this end of grade assessment will test students in grades 3 and 4 in the content areas of English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. Students in 5th grade will test in all content areas, which include: ELA, Math, Science and Social Studies.
To help prepare for the assessment, there are links provided which include a study guide for parents and students for each grade (3rd – 5th). Please click here for links to the study guides. Students can also practice using the online site and tools by clicking here and visiting Experience On-line Testing. Please note that it is necessary to use Google Chrome as your browser.
Tentative testing dates are:
April 12: Reading/Evidence Based Writing (Writing) 4th and 5th Grade
April 13: Reading/Evidence Based Writing (Writing) 3rd Grade
April 16: ELA (Reading & Language Arts) 4th and 5th Grade
April 17: ELA (Reading & Language Arts) 3rd Grade

April 19: Math 3rd Grade
April 20: Make Up Testing 3rd – 5th Grade

We are so excited for another great year to begin! Please click here to review the 2017-2018 school calendar for Shakerag Elementary. Our
school calendar is slightly different from the original Fulton County school
calendar. Our students will also be out on September 5, November 27,

Shakerag Volunteer Registration
To keep in compliance with State Law and best practices, for the 2017-2018 school year, we will require that all persons interested in volunteering in the Fulton County School District to re-register/register (even if a person has completed an application in the past) by completing the new online volunteer registration/application process. The registration process can be found on the FCS District Website under Community/Partners & Volunteers or Click Here. Applicants should be prepared to spend about 10-15 minutes for the training and application process. In accordance with State Law, all volunteers must be current with the Child Abuse Reporting Protocol Training before being allowed to volunteer in our schools. It is very important that volunteers enter their full legal name as it appears on their government issued ID (please do not use nicknames or "goes by" names on the application). All applicants must wait 24 hours after applying for application processing and approval.
As part of our move towards Personalized Learning, we will be teaching all our students how to use the Internet safely, ethically, and responsibly. Visit Common Sense Media for tools that you can use at home to further support these goals.
Shakerag is part of Fulton County's first group of schools working towards the goal of Personalized Learning for our students. We are excited to begin the work of transforming education to help challenge and engage students for the 21st century.
