Message from Dr. Spurka to Freshman Families

Dear Cambridge High School Freshman,

On behalf of the administration, faculty, and staff, I am excited to welcome you to the Cambridge family and the start of your high school career. This year, you will have many opportunities to contribute to the developing culture and traditions of our school. I am asking each of you to become actively involved in the life of the school by getting to know your teachers and administrators, becoming class leaders, starting clubs, and showing your Cambridge spirit on Fridays by wearing spirit wear and school colors: navy blue and Cambridge blue.

This year will provide you with a multitude of opportunities to develop your talents and contribute to both the school and our community. I encourage you to establish goals in both academic and extra-curricular areas. Those of you who are committed to excelling in the classroom and taking part in activities, clubs, student organizations, and athletics outside of the classroom will realize the greatest benefits from your years at Cambridge.

Please read through the information below to learn about support and enrichment programs, ways to get involved, and upcoming orientation events.

Freshman Orientation

  • Thursday, August 3rd – Student Orientation
From 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm, all freshmen are invited to an afternoon of freshmen orientation activities. You will meet other freshmen, as well as the administrators, counselors, your teachers, and upperclassmen student mentors. Students' schedules will be distributed, and you will have an opportunity to tour the building, go through your schedule, and find your classrooms before the first day of school. Students will also have an opportunity to purchase a locker for $15 (cash or check payable to Cambridge High School).

  • Thursday, August 3rd – Parent Orientation
Parents are invited to join their student in the gym for the beginning of 9th Grade Orientation at 2:00 pm. The administration and counseling department will be available in the auditorium following the orientation in the gym while students walk their schedules and meet their new teachers. Representatives from PTSA will be available to answer questions and provide the opportunity to join the Bear Team!  At the conclusion of the parent meeting, students and parents will have an opportunity to purchase spirit wear, meet our business partners, obtain Home Access Center access, and turn in Residency Verification forms.

Please note, all schedules will be redistributed to students on the first day of school. If your student cannot attend orientation, he/she will receive a schedule and purchase a locker during advisement the first day of school.

G.R.O.W.L.
New this year, Gaining Relevant Opportunities Through Wednesday Learning (G.R.O.W.L.) is a unique schedule that addresses several CHS goals, including supporting our 9th grade students as they transition to high school. Each semester there are eight G.R.O.W.L. days. On these Wednesdays, 9th graders will be required to report to school at the regular time. They will attend CLAWS Academy, a series of special programs/speakers designed to support their high school transition. Topics range from Digital Citizenship to four-year planning to Stress Management. In addition, 9th grade students will participate in either an Intramural Sport or a Study Hall.

C.L.A.W.S.
From your first day at Cambridge, you will have support from teachers, upperclassmen, and guidance counselors as part of the C.L.A.W.S. freshman support program. C.L.A.W.S. stands for "Caring, Learning, and Adapting while Succeeding," and your C.L.A.W.S. class will meet three days per week to help you become acclimated to and successful in high school life. Led by juniors and seniors, the C.L.A.W.S. program focuses on both academic and social issues that are common to 9th grade students.

P.A.W.S.
At the beginning of school, each 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students will have the opportunity to select P.A.W.S.2 classes. P.A.W.S.2 stands for "People Always Willing to Share and Support," and it is a seminar period that meets in the afternoon on Tuesday and Thursday. At Cambridge, teachers are always willing to share and support students and one another, and our talented faculty and staff offer enhancement programs like movies and physical conditioning and seminars for TAG credit, as well as academic and social programs like math or science support, study hall, or various clubs. Cambridge is an environment of shared learning, and P.A.W.S.2 offers a wide variety of seminar offerings from which students select and change as needed throughout the semester. P.A.W.S. will officially start after Labor Day.

Summer Reading
While all students are encouraged to read during the summer, students in some Honors and Advanced Placement courses have required summer reading assignments. Check the school's website, Cambridgehs.org, to determine if one of the classes you are taking has summer assignments.

Guidance
The Counseling department at Cambridge is excited to guide you through the high school journey. You will be assigned a counselor based on your last name. You can see your counselor by coming by the Guidance Office for anything from future college and career plans, seeking academic support to having a bad day. Your parents can schedule a meeting with your counselor by contacting them via email or phone call to schedule an appointment. In September, you will be given important information on graduation requirements and other timely topics through the C.L.A.W.S. program and class advisements. The same information will be shared with your parents through a separate Parent Night. In spring semester, before schedule selection for next year begins, you will meet individually with your counselor to go over your four-year plan. In short, the counselors are here to support and advise you throughout the four years of your high school career to ensure that each one of you ends up achieving the highest goals.

Clubs
Cambridge offers numerous clubs. Students are encouraged to start additional clubs based on their interests. Our faculty members are eager to sponsor clubs and contribute to the school outside of the classroom, and we will help match up faculty sponsors with specific clubs. The Club Application form will be available on our web site and the Front Office once school starts. To start a club, fill out the form and drop if off at the Front Office.

I look forward to personally welcoming each of you to Cambridge High School. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Sincerely,

Edward J. Spurka, Ed.D.
