Overview

Riverwood's Social Studies department prepares students to take their place as citizens in both a democratic society and a culturally diverse world. As the heart of the Global Studies Magnet Program, students draw knowledge from across the fields of history, economics, and political science to develop their own understanding of what it means to become a citizen at the local, state, national and ultimately global level.

The Global Studies Magnet Program requires students to take coursework in World Geography and International Affairs. Popular magnet program electives include Sociology, with a focus on race and ethnicity in the U.S., and a comparative course in world religions.

Also unique to Riverwood, the 9th grade magnet honors sequence allows students preparation for the challenging workload and expectations of AP and IB coursework. Students who choose to pursue the International Baccalaureate Diploma culminate their social studies coursework with IB 20th Century History, focusing on the Cold War and the rise and rule of single party states.
