The Westlake High School Ninth Grade Academy is an extension of Westlake High School and is designed to provide incoming freshman with a smooth transition this most pivotal year in high school. Research shows that separating ninth-grade students allows them to become better acquainted with the rigors of a high school curriculum in an environment that also allows them to mature and grow both academically and socially. Of equal importance, freshman academies are structured to give each student more individual attention, which translates into increased academic performance, fewer absences, and fewer behavior disturbances.
We are an academy of teachers, students, administrators, counselors, and parents committed to the achievement of our students. We consider ourselves a school-within-a-school organized around interdisciplinary teams of English, Math, Science, and Social Studies that share a common goal of academic excellence for all students, in all areas, at all times. Located in a designated area of the school building, teachers work together in cooperative learning teams to plan specific strategies for each student’s success. Therefore, incoming freshmen are connected to a select team of caring academy staff who use research proven best instructional strategies to teach the curriculum as well as address their students' needs more personally.
The Ninth Grade Advisement is an integral part of our academy and focuses on developing and honing the personal and academic skills of these students, while connecting them to the academic and career pathways that will define their next three years of high school.
The Westlake High School Ninth Grade Academy is built on four cornerstones we call The Four-Cs: Community, Character, Critical Thinking, and Commitment and operates under the motto “Where Excellence Begins.”
