We know you all have been anxiously awaiting the exam schedule, so here it is:
Thursday, December 15th**/Tuesday, December 20th – Science and ELA
Friday, December 16th**/Wednesday, December 21st – Math and Reading/World Language
Monday, December 19th**/Thursday, December 22nd – Social Studies
* No early testing is permitted, if students are absent, they will participate in makeup testing (see below)
** The first day of testing for each subject area is only for classes that have two distinct sections of the test that will be given on separate days (all students will be testing on the 20th-22nd). Check with your teachers to determine if you have any tests on the 15th, 16th, or 19th.
If your student will be absent during exams, there will be makeups offered on January 5th and 6th, as well as after school the first week we return from the holiday break. Please let your child’s teachers know if they will be absent, and send a note to the Front Office. I will send out some more information about makeups as we approach the end of the semester.
On the 22nd, students will also be taking the Student Climate Survey in their ELA classes. There will be more information coming soon about that survey, which is required by the State Education Department.
Congratulations to our HMS Band members:
The following HMS Band students have passed the first round of All-State Band auditions:

These students will travel to Perry, GA, on Saturday, January 7th to compete in the final round of auditions. Congratulations to all students who auditioned for the Georgia All-State Band this past Saturday at Ridgeview Charter Middle School, and best of luck to those who have advanced!
News from the Cafeteria:
Never had school breakfast before? Come by the Hopewell café during lunch on Monday December 12, and see what everyone is talking about! During lunch, your café will feature breakfast for lunch. Stop by and enjoy!
FCS Cafes Serve Chef-Inspired Georgia Grown Kale & Apple Salad!
This December, your FCS cafés will feature a farm fresh and chef-inspired Kale & Apple Salad at lunch as part of Fulton County’s School Nutrition Farm to School Initiative. Maximizing peak freshness, the Kale was grown and harvested in Norman Park, Georgia, and the Apples are farm fresh from Hendersonville, North Carolina! Because both the kale and apples are grown close to home it helps support our local farming economy, and takes less fuel to get to our cafeterias. You’ve got to try this Kale & Apple Salad, served in the cafeteria as a side salad!
School Governance Council:
The Hopewell Middle School Governance Council has been working to identify areas where we might want to request flexibility from policies that we feel may interfere with our students' ability to be successful. We feel we have identified one area that is worth consideration. Attached is a proposal to increase the scope of when our school can issue an incomplete to a student, rather than assign them a grade at the end of the semester that may indicate less-than-proficient academic performance. Please review the attached proposal. In the coming days and weeks, we will be collecting feedback from you regarding this potential RFF.
As always, thanks for your support.

Washington, D.C. Trip For 8th Graders
Dear 8th Grade Parents,
Thank you for being patient as we worked out the final dates for the 8th grade trip to Washington, D.C. The official dates for the trip will be Wednesday, May 10th to Saturday, May 13th.
If you are interested in your child attending the trip, please visit our trip website at ericaesslinger.weebly.com for all information regarding how to register and where to bring payments. Please read all directions carefully before submitting the registration form online or turning in paperwork to the HMS front office.
Please be aware that we will take trip payments in the form of cash, check, or money order. Checks and money orders should be made payable to HMS or Hopewell Middle School.
We understand the original timeline for the deposit is this coming Monday, and on such short notice this may not be a feasible deadline for you. Please know that we are committed to having as many students go on this trip as possible, and we will continue to take registrations and deposits through early November.
Last, please note that Erica Esslinger, our trip coordinator is currently out on maternity leave and will be back in late November. Should you have any questions or concerns, please direct them to Joel Peterson, 8th Grade Assistant Principal.
Thank you Hopewell students for participating in our week long Digital Citizenship trainings! Please go to the Common Sense Media website for more information. The parent handouts are also linked below for your convenience.

Student Registration for 2016-2017 School Year
Please call Hopewell's front office at 470-254-3240, in order to schedule an appointment to complete registration. You can print and complete all the necessary paperwork (which is located under Registration and Forms) prior to your appointment.
If you have a rising 6th grader coming from a Feeder School that is zoned for our school, there is NO need to register your student. You will need to fulfill the residency verification requirement (see below).
Residency Verification Requirements
The district revised its School Admission Policy for Residence Verification. Families are no longer required to complete an Affidavit of Residence for every year of student enrollment. Proofs of residence must be provided at the following times:
- Initial enrollment into Fulton County Schools
- Entry into Kindergarten, 6th grade, 9th grade
- When there is any address change.
See Registration and Forms for more information and a list of approved documents.
Planning to travel? Check this first
If you are planning to travel during the school year, please review your child's attendance record first. Fulton County Schools' attendance policy can be found online at www.hopewellmustangs.net under Parents, 2015-2016 Handbook and on page 6 in your child's agenda. Please note that in order to have any planned absence considered approved, a letter from the parent must be submitted to the assistant principal PRIOR (3 to 5 days) to the planned absence. Approved absences are limited to six (6) per year. The absence may or may not be approved. As well, if your child has missed 10 or more total days of school this year, you may be asked to provide medical notes for additional absences to be considered excused (in accordance with Fulton County's attendance policy). Please reconsider scheduling your family travel/vacation time to coincide with school breaks and avoid missed class time whenever possible.
Thank you for your assistance in keeping your student in class for instruction.
