Community meeting planned for new STEM-focused high school campus in North Fulton
Fulton County Schools invites parents and community members to a special March 28 meeting to provide input on its new STEM focused high school campus planned for North Fulton. The meeting will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the site of the former Milton High School (now called the Milton Center) in the building’s media center.
Scheduled to open by Fall 2020 on the site of the Milton Center, the building will host college and career-focused curriculum pathways with a focus in the areas of Engineering, Healthcare Science, and Information Technology. The community meeting will share information on STEM curriculum pathways and how they can be most beneficial in preparing students for their post-secondary options, whether it be through a two- or four-year college experience or through directly entering the workforce with specialized STEM skills. Earlier this month, as a first step in the engagement process, visioning workshops were held with school leaders, teachers, students, and industry experts in healthcare, information technology, and post-secondary educational institutions to discuss curriculum pathways and how the STEM campus can link the work of students to real world, project-based learning opportunities.
Below you will find the 2017 Milestones EOG/EOC Testing Schedule. Fulton County determines the testing calendar and therefore, during the month of April and May, we will complete the Milestones End of Grade (EOG) and End of Course (EOC) assessments. All students will take the assessments online using their devices. You can explore the online platform at http://www.gaexperienceonline.com (use Google Chrome as your browser if you can). The primary purpose of the site is to let students, parents and teachers experience, firsthand, the functionality of the online testing platform. Students will continue to practice at school as well. We will stagger start times, but all tests will be completed in the morning. All students will take the ELA and Math tests. Only 8th grade students will take the Science and Social Studies EOG assessments. Students taking an EOC in HS Physical Science, Algebra I or Geometry will NOT take the EOG. However, students taking the 9th Grade Literature EOC will also take the 8th grade EOG. Make-ups will be conducted throughout the testing window. Please do your best to ensure students are present on testing days, and that they come to school with their Surface fully charged. HMS Testing Calendar.pdf

Interested in travel?
Hopewell teachers are offering two distinct opportunities for international travel in the future. Señora Haak is organizing an educational tour to Italy, France and Spain that departs June 4, 2018 and Ms. Nilson is organizing a tour of the Galapagos Islands this June, 2017. International travel offers students an opportunity to experience other cultures and traditions firsthand, bringing the classroom to life. To learn more and sign up for these unique opportunities parents and students are invited to attend an informational meeting on Thursday, January 19th at 7:30 in the Hopewell media center.
For information on Italy, France & Spain go to: http://www.explorica.com/Haak-2080
School Governance Council:
The Hopewell Middle School Governance Council has been working to identify areas where we might want to request flexibility from policies that we feel may interfere with our students' ability to be successful. We feel we have identified one area that is worth consideration. Attached is a proposal to increase the scope of when our school can issue an incomplete to a student, rather than assign them a grade at the end of the semester that may indicate less-than-proficient academic performance. Please review the attached proposal. In the coming days and weeks, we will be collecting feedback from you regarding this potential RFF.
As always, thanks for your support.

The district revised its School Admission Policy for Residence Verification. Families are no longer required to complete an Affidavit of Residence for every year of student enrollment. Proofs of residence must be provided at the following times:
- Initial enrollment into Fulton County Schools
- Entry into Kindergarten, 6th grade, 9th grade
- When there is any address change.
See Registration and Forms for more information and a list of approved documents.
Planning to travel? Check this first
If you are planning to travel during the school year, please review your child's attendance record first. Fulton County Schools' attendance policy can be found online at www.hopewellmustangs.net under Parents, 2015-2016 Handbook and on page 6 in your child's agenda. Please note that in order to have any planned absence considered approved, a letter from the parent must be submitted to the assistant principal PRIOR (3 to 5 days) to the planned absence. Approved absences are limited to six (6) per year. The absence may or may not be approved. As well, if your child has missed 10 or more total days of school this year, you may be asked to provide medical notes for additional absences to be considered excused (in accordance with Fulton County's attendance policy). Please reconsider scheduling your family travel/vacation time to coincide with school breaks and avoid missed class time whenever possible.
Thank you for your assistance in keeping your student in class for instruction.
