The Freshman Academy teams up with CNN for #myfreedomday!

Check out CNN's web page with our students at www.CNN.com/MyFreedomDay

Guest speaker & former Spartan - AnnieCannons founder Laura Hackney . . .

is introduced by English teacher and her former classmate Christine Pekatos to 9th grade English language classes as part of the Academy's focus on CNN's Freedom Project and #myfreedomday.  After graduating from NSCHS, U of California at Berkley, studying in China and earning her graduate degree at Standford - Laura founded and is the Executive Director of AnnieCannons - a California nonprofit committed to helping teach trafficking survivors marketable coding and software skills.

About our Freshman Academy . . .

Our new Freshman Academy is designed to be a small learning community just for 9th graders.  We're created a corridor of classrooms with all specially selected 9th grade Academy teachers for classes in English Language Arts and Math and 3 special course offerings - one of which all Freshman Academy students will take: AP Human Geography, AVID or Freshmen Success.  These classes provide an important foundation - the study skills, rigor, nurture and support our newest Spartans need to achieve success in 9th grade and beyond.  We can't wait to get started together.

Here's a link to the research and rationale behind 9th Grade Academies.

A few items that are nonnegotiable:

  • ALL freshmen received an agenda. They must use it daily:
    • Students must write in the agenda every day: Learning Target, Daily Vocabulary, Gradual Release, and Evidence of Mastery.
    • Please utilize the agenda for passes. No agenda = no passes

Congratulations Freshman Academy
